The tie-breaking rules are the leagues’ own. Both are reproduced here in full — baseball’s and football’s — and the engine that decides a tie applies them as written rather than approximating them. Where a race turns on head-to-head records, division records or strength of schedule, that is the rule being read, in the order the league reads it.
A magic number here means the number of results that makes a place arithmetically certain — counted against the real remaining schedule and the tiebreakers that would apply, not from a rule of thumb. When a club’s spot is settled, it reads as settled.
Worth knowing, because the site does not treat them the same. Baseball’s clinches and eliminations are proved: a spot is called clinched only when no remaining set of results can take it away. Football’s clinching status comes from simulating the rest of the season, which is a strong signal but not a proof — so an NFL club shown at or near certainty is being described, not guaranteed.
Playoff odds come from playing the remaining schedule out many times over. Two ways of doing it are offered: treating every remaining game as a coin flip, or weighting each one by what the clubs have scored and allowed so far. Neither knows about injuries, rotations, trades or weather, and neither is a prediction — they describe how much room a club has left, not what will happen.
